The Secret to Email Success: Crafting Subject Lines That Sell

You've spent countless hours crafting the perfect email. The copy is engaging, the design is on point, and your call-to-action is irresistible. But there's one crucial element that can make or break your email's success before it even has a chance to shine—your subject line.

A lackluster subject line can doom your email to the unopened abyss of your recipient's inbox. It's the first impression your email makes, and in the crowded world of email marketing, making a memorable first impression is vital.

Here's how you can ensure your emails not only get opened but also drive conversions.

  1. Keep It Short and Sweet

Effective subject lines are concise yet powerful.

Aim for less than six words to grab attention and convey your message quickly. This brevity ensures your full subject line can be seen on mobile devices, where most emails are now read.

The Preview Text is your ally here, allowing you to continue the conversation and entice your reader further.

2. Command Action

Your subject line should make it clear what action you want the reader to take. Incorporating verbs is a simple yet effective way to do this (Meet, Discover, Shop). Commands, when used sparingly and strategically, can increase your open rates by creating a direct line of communication with your audience.

3. Spark Interest

An engaging subject line is the key to piquing your customer's curiosity. Whether you're creating a sense of urgency, excitement, or simply asking a thought-provoking question, your goal is to make opening the email irresistible. Crafting a subject line that stands out in a crowded inbox can be challenging, but the payoff is worth it.

I love this example from previous client, This Works. Do you have some customer testimonials you could use?

4. Make It About the Reader

Always put your customer at the forefront. Your subject line should clearly articulate the value of your email. Why should they care? What's in it for them? Personalisation goes a long way here; it shows your subscribers that you understand their needs and interests.

Remember, your email's subject line is your first opportunity to engage with your audience. Don't let your hard work go to waste by settling for anything less than a compelling, attention-grabbing subject line.

Crafting the perfect subject line is an art, but with these guidelines, you're well on your way to mastering it. Happy emailing!
